Field Trip #3

Today could not have been more perfect for a field trip. The sun shined all day long!! Something that hasn't happened quite too often since I've been here.  Our first stop was Labbacalle Wedge Tomb which is the biggest wedge tomb in Ireland. We then headed to Mitchelstown Cave which was a cave that was found in 1833 by a man who dropped his crowbar through a crevice between some rocks and went looking for it. The cave was spectacular, but unfortunately no pictures were allowed so I don't have any pictures to show. Electricity was just installed into this cave in the 70's but guided tours were given long before then even with candlelight. Our tour guide turned off all the lights, so we could see what it is like in complete darkness, and you can't even see a hand in front of your face! So I can't even imagine going on a tour prior to the 70's!  The acoustics are amazing in the cave, and they hold concerts every once in a while mostly jazz or classical because they sound the best. Wouldn't that be so cool to go to a concert in a cave!?

We had lunch afterwards which wasn't all that great. They eat a lot of soup here, but it's always pureed. So their vegetable soup is never chunky just creamy. It's usually pretty good, but always sort of a guessing game as to what vegetables are really in the soup. I'm still on the lookout for some chunky soup....    So lunch was just soup and sandwiches.

Our last stop was the Rock of Cashel which is in County Tipperary. This is a natural defensive site that used to house the Kings of Muenster prior to the Norman invasion. It also displays the best Romanesque style church in Ireland. It was quite the hill to climb to get to the Rock of Cashel, but the view was amazing!

Only pic from the caves :(
